Spoilers
In the Anime, as the way of creating a Homunculus is by feeding a "failed human transmutation" with Red Stones, a Homunculus was born from Ed and Al's transmutation, and Dante feeded it. from that, the Homunculus named Sloth was born. As many of the other homunculi, she remembered many things of her human life. This, added to her resemblance, gave many problems to the Elric brothers when they had to confront her.

Pinako
She is Winry's grandmother and the Elric's refer to her as Aunt Pinako. After Edward and Alphonse's parents died she took care of them. It is later learned that when she was younger she was a very well known auto-mail mechanic, whose nickname was the tigress of Rizenbul. She has been Van Hohenheim's friend for a long time, even she was very young. And Hohenheim never changed.
The Amestrian Military: The State Alchemists
Major Edward Elric: The Fullmetal Alchemist
(see Above)
Colonel Roy Mustang: The Flame Alchemist
main article Roy Mustang
Called the flame alchemist because of his use of flames in combat. He seems to care only about promotions. In truth he is disgusted with the state of the country and military and wants to become Fuhrer to try to make the world a better place. He has his transmutation arrays impressed in his gloves, who are made of a special material that can produce sparks with touch.
Major Alex Louis Armstrong: The Strong Arm Alchemist
The Major Armstrong is known as the Strong Arm Alchemist because he combines his alchemy, that consists in projectiles and earth shockwaves, with his physical abilities, making him a formidable one on one opponent. However, he has a kind heart, maybe too kind for the military career he has, and this has caused many problems to him. In the manga he is know as the man who desserted in ishbal as being unable to endure it, and this is the reason why he has not being able to go up in rank like his fellow ishbalan veterans (like Mustang). He has his transmutation arrays carved in his gaunlets.
There are two versions for his family. In the Anime, his father, mother, and a young sister were presented, but they were included in a comical filler, so they don't have influence in the main story. In the manga, only a big sister has been presented. She is the leader of the Briggs Front who protects Amestris from possibe Drachma attacks.
Lieutenant Colonel Zolf J. Kimblee: The Crimson Alchemist
a perverse man. In the Manga, his ability consists to transform anything into a bomb; yet in the anime, his ability was carried to even more perverse levels so that his favourite material were humans. He was imprisoned because he killed his own regiment in the ishbalan war. He has two tatoos, one on each hand, which are his transmutation arrays.
In both anime and manga, the first time he is seen is in the prison near Laboratory 5. From there, his role in both stories is somewhat important, but completely different.
In the Anime he used the Lab 5 incident to escape, and lately joined forces with Greed's group. He then betrayed him in order to return to the military as a former alchemist under Archer's orders. He is finally killed by scar, but after transforming Al into a time bomb.
In the Manga, he is liberated by the homunculi in order to pursue the elric brothers. He arraves at briggs (not before fighting with scar, where he almost lost his life) under orders of Lieutenant General Raven. After the death of the General and the abduction of Major General Armstrong to Central, he takes care of briggs; but briggs riots against him and they try to kill him, but he managed to escape. In his escape, he recieved orders from Pride to carve a crest of blood in briggs, so he contacted Drachma army to tell them that General Armstrong was not in Briggs so it was a good time to attack; but the Drachma army is completely defeated. When the remains of the Drachma Army tries to return Kimbley as a prisoner, he manages again to escape and his whereabaouts are unknown up to date.
Doctor (Major) Shou Tucker: The Sewing Life Alchemist
A once renowed alchemist and chimera expert whose greatest achievement was to create a chimera which could talk. Mustang presented him to the brothers in order to: get information about the Philosopher's Stone (Manga) or to help them to pass the state alchemists exam (anime). When the time to present the advances on their investigation for the State Alchemists came, Tucker felt panic without nothing clear to present. So, he did something desperate to save his position: he transmuted nina, her daughter and alexander, his dog, into a chimera that indeed, could talk; as he did with his wife years ago.
Ed deducted this when he saw the new created chimera, in a rage, he attacked Tucker. He in defense said he as state alchemist searched the advance of science and for that some sacrifices had to be made. He compared his acions with ed's ones, saying that he also tried human transmutation just to feed his hunger of knowledge.
In the Anime, he is supposed to be executed by a martial court, yet he was let alive due to his knowledge in chimera transmutation. He himself was transformed into a chimera. he seems to have been fused with a bear, or a mixture of similar animals. His body was deformed to a point that his chest seems to have been pasted backwards on the bears body, having to talk with the head turned upside down.

He seems to have lost his mind, and in his madness, he searches a way to resurrect his daughter in the form of a chimera. That's why he helps Ed in the Lab 5 incident and he then tries to use Al's Philosopher's stone to resurrect nina (this last try leaving him with a soulless vessel). He is also liberated by Greed in order to heal his Chimera fellows. At the end of the Anime we see him concentrated in his studies to achieve his goal.
In the manga, he is killed by Scar, when he was on his first Anti-state Alchemists crusade.
